"Seniors for Seniors"

At Precious Paws Rescue, Inc. we realize that many senior citizens in our community enjoy pets, many have been responsible pet owners in the past, many would like to have a pet around as a companion ... but these individuals simply may not be able to take that chance of having to pay for an expensive "emergency care" procedure, preventative medications, etc. while living on a fixed income, or maybe they are unable to drive to transport a pet to/from veterinary care appointments for even routine procedures such as vaccines.

We realize that many of these individuals would have their quality of life improved if they owned a pet and had that constant loving companionship that comes with caring for and bonding with a pet.  To that end, we created the Seniors for Seniors initiative.  Under this program, eligible senior citizens or homebound individuals are allowed to adopt a pet from Precious Paws Rescue, Inc. at a reduced adoption fee.

In addition to reducing the adoption fee, Precious Paws Rescue, Inc. and our veterinary care partners have committed to helping those that are eligible under the Seniors For Seniors program with the continued maintenance of their new friend.  When these individuals adopt a pet, volunteers from Precious Paws will help with transporting the pet to and from grooming and veterinary appointments.  Further, these individuals will receive the benefit of continued veterinary care and grooming services at reduced pricing rates, ensuring their ability to provide the necessary care to maintain their new friend and keep their pet healthy and happy so that they can enjoy the "Golden Years" together.

From the dog's point of view, it's also an excellent match, in that most senior dogs (5 years and older) are more quiet, gentle, docile and are typically "lap dogs" that are quite content to just "be" in the room with someone, enjoy long naps during the day and get an occasional belly rub.  They are usually housebroken and less energetic than a puppy or younger dog, and therefore require less "hands on" management to keep them out of trouble!  This program offers homes to dogs that would otherwise stand a chance of being passed over by most potential adopters for being too quiet, not active enough to play all day with children, etc.  We at Precious Paws Rescue, Inc. recognize that just because these animals are a little past their "prime" and ready to enjoy their retirement years doesn't mean they should be overlooked!  Many of these senior animals gave their best years of love and life to families and children ... only to be discarded at the shelter or our rescue when the newer "puppy" came to live with the family .... that's no reward for their invested years of love and service to their humans!  They need a second chance!

This program was designed primarily with those in mind who are 55 years of age or older, retired, "empty-nesters" that need a traveling companion, and also those that are homebound or disabled, and those on fixed income.  Each application is considered on a case by case basis, references are required, a home visit is performed, and we consult the potential adopter and their families regarding which pet is most suited to their environment.

The animals available under  the Seniors for Seniors program are posted on the "Adoptable" page and are noted as being eligible for the program.  If you would like information on this program, or know a senior that you'd like us to consider, please contact us at (704) 509-9861 or email adoptions@preciouspawsrescue.com and we'll be glad to get in touch with you!
